Car Sales Tax Calculator: All 50 States (2026)

Use this car sales tax calculator to estimate the tax and total cost of a new or used car in any state. Enter the price, your trade-in and, if you know it, your city or county tax rate.

How the calculation works

  1. Taxable amount = vehicle price − trade-in value (only in states that deduct trade-ins).
  2. Tax = taxable amount × (state rate + local rate). A few states cap the tax, for example South Carolina at $500.
  3. Total = price − trade-in + tax + fees.

Rebates, dealer discounts, extended warranties and private-party sales can change the taxable amount. Some states (Georgia, Texas for private sales) tax a state-assessed value instead of the price you paid. Treat the result as an estimate and confirm the final amount with the dealer or your county tax office.

Examples from the car sales tax calculator

On a $30,000 car with no trade-in, the car sales tax calculator gives the highest state-level tax in California ($2,175), Georgia ($2,100) and Indiana ($2,100). The lowest amounts among states that tax cars are in Oregon ($150), South Carolina ($500) and Alabama ($600). Local rates can move these numbers by several hundred dollars, which is why the calculator lets you add your city or county rate.

How trade-ins change the result

Most states tax only the difference between the price and your trade-in, so a $5,000 trade-in at a 6% rate saves about $300. The car sales tax calculator applies that rule automatically when you pick a state. California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Oregon and Virginia tax the full price instead, and a few states give only a limited credit; the result notes which rule was used.

What the car sales tax calculator does not include

Title fees, registration fees, plate fees, documentation fees charged by dealers and extended warranties vary by dealer and county. Add them in the fees field to see an out-the-door estimate. Rebates paid by the manufacturer are taxable in some states and not in others, so the car sales tax calculator does not subtract them for you.

Car sales tax calculator: questions

Is the car sales tax calculator accurate for used cars?

Yes for dealer sales at the state rate. Private sales in some states are taxed on a book value or a minimum value, so the real bill can be higher.

Which state's tax do I enter if I buy across the border?

Enter the state where you will register the car. Tax is owed there, even if you buy the car somewhere else.

Does the car sales tax calculator save my numbers?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored.
