About RoamAmerica

RoamAmerica answers the road-rule questions people search for every day: Do I need a helmet here? Can I split lanes? How much insurance do I need? How much tax will I pay on this car?

What we cover

How we keep it accurate

Every rule is checked against state law and trusted sources such as IIHS, NHTSA and the Insurance Information Institute. Each page shows the date the data was last reviewed. When a state changes its law, we update the page and the date. Read more in Sources and methodology.

Who it is for

Drivers planning a road trip across several states, families moving to a new state, parents of new teen drivers, motorcycle riders and anyone buying a car. Each state has its own page for every topic, a summary page with all of its rules, and comparisons with its neighbors.

How the pages are built

We keep one record per state and topic, with the rule, any exceptions and the date it took effect. Pages, maps and comparisons are written from that record, so a correction made once appears everywhere at the same time.

Not legal advice

RoamAmerica is an independent information site. It is not affiliated with any government agency, and the information here is not legal, tax or insurance advice. Always confirm details with the official state agency.
