National Mall guide: the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol, the Smithsonian museums, the war memorials, the cherry blossoms and tips for walking it.
What to expect
The National Mall is the open park that stretches about 3 kilometers from the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, lined with the country’s most famous monuments and museums. It is run by the National Park Service and free to visit day and night.
At its center rises the Washington Monument, 169 meters tall; tickets to ride to the top are free but must be reserved. At the west end, the Lincoln Memorial looks across the Reflecting Pool, with the World War II, Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Veterans memorials close by.
Along both sides, the Smithsonian museums are free, including the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In spring, the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin bloom in late March or early April.
The monuments are lit at night, and an evening walk from the Lincoln Memorial along the Reflecting Pool is one of the most memorable experiences in the city. Distances are bigger than they look, so wear good shoes or rent a Capital Bikeshare bike.
