Mammoth Cave guide: ranger-led cave tours and tickets, the Historic and Domes and Dripstones tours, Frozen Niagara, the Green River, hiking and how to book.

What to expect

Beneath the wooded hills of central Kentucky lies the longest known cave system on Earth: more than 426 miles of passages have been mapped, and explorers keep finding new ones. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an international biosphere reserve.

The cave can only be visited on ranger-led tours, from easy walks to tight crawls. The Historic Tour follows passages explored since the early 1800s, including saltpeter mining works used to make gunpowder during the War of 1812, while the Domes and Dripstones Tour descends a long staircase to sparkling formations such as Frozen Niagara.

Entry to the park itself is free, but tour tickets sell out in summer and on holidays, so book online in advance. Above ground, hiking trails wind through the forest and the Green River offers canoe and kayak trips.

The park is about an hour and a half by car from both Nashville and Louisville, which makes it an easy stop on a road trip between the two cities.
