National WWII Museum guide: the Road to Berlin and Road to Tokyo galleries, the Boeing Center aircraft, the 4D film Beyond All Boundaries, tickets and how much time to plan.
What to expect
Founded in 2000 as the National D-Day Museum by the historian Stephen Ambrose, the museum in New Orleans was named by Congress in 2003 as America’s official museum of World War II. Its campus in the Warehouse District spans several pavilions that follow the war from the home front to the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific.
The Road to Berlin and Road to Tokyo galleries lead visitors through rooms built to look like bombed European towns and Pacific jungles, with personal stories and oral histories at every turn. In the Boeing Center, restored aircraft, including a B-17 Flying Fortress, hang beneath a soaring glass roof.
The 4D film Beyond All Boundaries, narrated by Tom Hanks, plays in the Solomon Victory Theater and is worth the extra ticket. Most visitors need a full day here; the museum is a short walk from the French Quarter.
