MoMA guide: The Starry Night and other masterpieces, the floors and the sculpture garden, tickets and free entry for children, the best time to visit and tips.

MoMA: what to expect

Founded in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan holds one of the most important collections of modern art in the world. Its expansion in 2019 added gallery space and mixed painting with design, film and photography on the same floors.

The fifth floor is where most visitors head first, for Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Henri Matisse’s Dance and Salvador Dalí’s melting clocks in The Persistence of Memory. Nearby, Claude Monet’s Water Lilies fill a whole wall, and later galleries show Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans.

The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, with works by Rodin and Picasso around a reflecting pool, is a calm place to rest between floors. The museum also screens classic films in its theaters.

Weekend afternoons are crowded, especially in front of the famous paintings, so arrive at opening and go straight to the fifth floor.
