Grand Teton guide: Jenny Lake, Mormon Row, Oxbow Bend, Signal Mountain, the Teton Park Road, wildlife, hikes and when to go.
What to expect
Just south of Yellowstone, the Teton Range shoots up more than 2,100 meters above the valley floor of Jackson Hole. Because the mountains rise along an active fault without foothills, the view from the road is unusually dramatic: the Grand Teton itself tops out at 4,199 meters, and a string of glacial lakes lies right at the base of the peaks.
The Teton Park Road and the Jenny Lake Scenic Drive lead to the classic viewpoints. Oxbow Bend on the Snake River mirrors Mount Moran at sunrise, and the weathered barns of Mormon Row are among the most photographed buildings in the West. A shuttle boat crosses Jenny Lake to the start of the short climb to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point.
Moose browse in the willows along the rivers, and bison, elk and pronghorn graze the open flats. The town of Jackson, about 20 minutes south of the park, is the main base for food and lodging, while the campgrounds inside the park fill early on summer days.
