Carlsbad Caverns guide: the Natural Entrance trail, the Big Room, the elevator, timed-entry tickets, the summer bat flight, Guadalupe Mountains nearby and the entrance fee.
What to expect
Beneath the Guadalupe Mountains of southern New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns National Park protects more than 119 known caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the limestone of an ancient reef. The most famous is Carlsbad Cavern itself, home of the Big Room, the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America.
You can walk in through the Natural Entrance, a steep trail of about 2 kilometers that drops roughly 230 meters, or take the elevator down to the Big Room. The Big Room loop, also about 2 kilometers, passes stalagmites, columns and formations such as the Rock of Ages.
From late spring to October, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiral out of the cave at dusk, and rangers lead a free program at the amphitheater by the entrance. Electronic devices, including cameras and phones, are not allowed during the bat flight.
Entry needs a timed reservation on top of the entrance fee. The town of Carlsbad is about 30 minutes away, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park, with the highest point in Texas, is a short drive south.
